Manny Ramirez is retiring from Major League Baseball due to “an issue” with drugs, the league said Friday. In a statement, MLB said it had “recently notified Manny Ramirez of an issue under Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.” Rather than “continue with the process under the program,” Ramirez opted to retire, the statement read. According to The New York Times, Ramirez tested postive for steroid abuse, an infraction for which he would have faced a 100-game suspension. So far this season, he has batted 1 for 17 for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Mike Zimmer gets game ball after the death of his wife

Four days after the death of his wife, Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer earned a game ball after the team's 17-14 win in Baltimore on Sunday.

Head coach Marvin Lewis awarded Zimmer the ball in an emotional scene inside the team's locker room. Bengals players then huddled around Zimmer and jumped up and down.

"My wife loves all of you," Zimmer said to the team. "Win or lose, she's proud of you.

"And I just appreciate all of your effort."

Zimmer's wife, Vicki, died on Thursday at the age of 50. No cause of death has been announced. -- Sean Leahy

Miles Austin scored the winning touchdown in overtime on a 60-yard catch-and-run to cap a record-breaking game in place of the injured Roy Williams, and the Dallas Cowboys escaped with a 26-20 victory Sunday over Kansas City.

Austin had 250 yards receiving on 10 catches to break the 43-year-old single-game franchise record and help the Cowboys survive numerous mistakes against the winless Chiefs. Hall of Famer Bob Hayes had 246 yards in 1966 against Washington.

Austin also had a tackle-breaking 59-yard touchdown catch to give the Cowboys (3-2) a 20-13 lead with 2:16 left in the fourth quarter. On both plays, he slipped the grasp of cornerback Maurice Leggett and then made safety Mike Brown miss.

The loss dropped the Chiefs (0-5) to 2-28 in their last 30 games. Kansas City, winless for 315 days, tied it 20-20 on Matt Cassel's 16-yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Bowe with 24 seconds left.

Austin is the third Cowboys receiver when Williams is healthy. He was unstoppable against the Chiefs, who led most of the game but couldn't take advantage of all the opportunities the Cowboys kept handing them. Dallas was penalized 13 times for 90 yards and Tony Romo overthrew several open receivers.

But he and Miles connected when it mattered most. Late in the fourth quarter, Austin caught Romo's pass, broke loose from tackles by Leggett and Brown, and gave the Cowboys their first lead of the day.

Then Cassel swept the Chiefs down the field, hitting Bowe in the end zone on fourth-and-7. Ryan Succop, who had a 53-yard field goal attempt blocked by Jay Ratliff right before Dallas' last TD in regulation, kicked the extra point for the tie.

Romo was 20 for 34 for 351 yards and two TDs. Cassel, still winless since being traded from New England, was 23 for 41 for 263 yards. Neither quarterback threw an interception.

Chiefs linebacker Mike Vrabel made his 11th career touchdown catch to give Kansas City a 10-0 lead. After Romo's fumble was recovered on the Dallas 16 by Brown, the Chiefs had faced third-and-goal from the 1. Vrabel, a 13-year veteran, lined up on the left side and was ignored by the defense as he drifted into the end zone and caught Cassel's soft toss, giving him 11 touchdowns in 11 career catches.

The Chiefs won the coin toss and received in the overtime but failed to get close enough for a field goal attempt.

Shamwow guy Vince Shlomi arrested for beating a hooker

Shlomi told cops he paid [Sasha] Harris about $1000 in cash after she “propositioned him for straight sex.” Shlomi said that when he kissed Harris, she suddenly “bit his tongue and would not let go.” Shlomi then punched Harris several times until she released his tongue. The affidavit…notes that during the 4 AM fight Harris sustained facial fractures and lacerations all over her face…. After freeing his tongue, a bleeding Shlomi ran to the [hotel] lobby, where security summoned cops. Harris refused to cooperate with officers, who recovered $930 from her purse.

The hooker is reportedly considering a lawsuit against Shlomi, though prosecutors “declined to file formal charges” against him.

No drama: Donovan 'committed' to Florida

Florida released a statement on Friday afternoon to address any possible chance that Gators basketball coach Billy Donovan would be a candidate for the Kentucky job.

Billy Gillispie was fired at an afternoon press conference after two seasons, going 40-27. This year's team finished 22-14, tied for the second-most losses in the program's 106-year history. The Wildcats also failed to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1991.

"In response to the rumors circulating about my interest in other jobs, I wanted to address this as quickly as possible ," Donovan's statement said. "I am committed to the University of Florida and look forward to continuing to build our program here."

Donovan, a former UK assistant under Rick Pitino who was beloved by the Wildcats' fans, led UF to back-to-back national titles in 2006 in 2007. The second championship season concluded with Tubby Smith leaving Kentucky to take the head coaching job at Minnesota. At the time, the Gators were playing in the regional tournament in St. Louis. Rumors that Donovan would consider going to Kentucky didn't die out until after the NCAA Tournament concluded.

This time, Donovan addressed speculation head-on and put an end to it, immediately.

Donovan's current contract includes a clause that requires him to get written permission from athletic director Jeremy Foley before discussing other employment. The deal, which runs through the 2012-13 season and is worth about $3.5 million per year, also includes a buyout clause.

If Donovan, who owns the school record for coaching wins with a 310-125 record in 13 seasons, leaves without being fired, he must pay the school $500,000 or the total termination compensation due his assistant coaches, whichever is less.

He is also due a $400,000 longevity bonus for the past season. He will receive another bonus of $500,000 for coaching the entire 2009-10 season. He also has longevity bonuses in his contract that pay him $400,000, $450,000 and $500,000 the final three years of the current deal.

Florida finished this past season with a 25-11 record and lost 71-62 to Penn State in the third round of the NIT. The Gators had a streak of nine straight NCAA tourney bids, the most successful run in school history, before it ended in the spring of 2008.

Caldwell: I definitely would have taken a second look because he looked so stunningly handsome. I really like that he is such a chameleon and so versatile.

Caldwell: Being such a front-runner from the beginning can sometimes hurt you in this competition, but I think that in Adam's case, he has really given us something new and fresh every week. So I say the best thing Adam can do is not be cautious.

TVGuide.com: The judges called Megan Joy an "atrocious," "mad-crazy" "train wreck" who is now "in trouble." Do you concur that she in fact struggled the most out of the Top 10?
Caldwell: I think Megan has a lot of raw talent and that she just had an off week. With a little tweaking and polishing, she could be back in the game.

TVGuide.com: What potential do you see in Megan?
Caldwell: She's very fresh and modern and has that whole Duffy/Amy Winehouse energy. It's worked out for them, so, "Go Megan!"

TVGuide.com: What would be your best advice to Anoop moving forward, assuming he may have hit a ceiling?
Caldwell: When we first saw Anoop, he was on fire. So I really think he just needs to get that spark back in his eye. And when he's on that stage, he needs to soak up the moment and realize this is his time to shine.

TVGuide.com: Michael Sarver was told by Simon that he has "no chance of winning." What does a singer do with that moving forward?
Caldwell: Even though everybody comes to win Idol, it's been proven over and over again that if you represent yourself as the artist you want to be while you're on the show and really take advantage of all the opportunities afterward, winning is not a necessity. But I think Michael is really relatable and likable; he definitely still has a shot.

TVGuide.com: Take a moment here to rave freely about the 17-year-old powerhouse that is Allison Iraheta.
Caldwell: She is flawless. What a superstar! Every performer should aspire to have her comfort level and star power on stage. She is a true pro.

TVGuide.com: Lastly, do you suspect Simon had hell to pay, after the cameras stopped rolling, having doodled with marker on Paula's lip?
Caldwell: I think we all get a kick out of the banter between Simon and Paula every show, however this really took it over the top. But I'm sure in that studio, Simon can do no wrong. Chalk it up to good TV!

GDC 09: 'Modern Warfare 2' set to deploy

Developer Infinity Ward announced the Nov. 10, 2009 (11.10.09) arrival date of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 at the end of the Game Developers Conference awards ceremony Wednesday night with its first teaser trailer for a game ever.

The shadowy footage reveals an apparent attack on civilians by suspected Russian terrorists. The trailer can be seen on Infinity Ward's site at http://modernwarfare2.infinityward.com/.

Enthusiasts who want to break down the footage can click an "Analyze" button to freeze images and share their findings on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks."These are hints about what the game will be," says chief technology officer Jason West. "We're giving them (fans) tools to talk about it."

The developer's Robert Bowling has a Modern Warfare 2 twitter feed that has grown to more than 11,000 followers (information at http://www.fourzerotwo.com/) . It was used last month to illicit advice about game features that fans were interested in.

The already lucky few (hundred) who have tickets to this Thursday's American Idol taping may get even luckier.

Although Fox isn't confirming anything, MJsBigBlog.com (a regular read for the Idol-obsessed) reports that Jennifer Hudson, one of the competition's most successful alumni, is secretly taping a performance this week, to air sometime later in the season.

If that's true, this would mark Hudson's first Idol visit since the October 2008 murders of her mother, brother and nephew. Hudson's very first public performance following that family tragedy came at this year's Super Bowl, where she served up the National Anthem.

Officially set to perform on Idol's next results show — which this week airs on Thursday, due to President Obama's Tuesday-night press conference — are Season 2 champ Ruben Studdard and Smokey Robinson, the guest mentor for this week's Motown theme. According to MJs, once the cameras stop rolling at 9 pm/ET, Hudson will tape her performance of a song off her Grammy-winning, self-titled debut album.

Oliphant Israel-Gaza cartoon called 'hideously anti-Semitic'

The latest cartoon by the most widely syndicated political cartoonist in the world has raised the ire of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which is dedicated to fighting anti-Semitism.

The ADL's director called the syndicated cartoon, published Wednesday and reprinted below, "hideously anti-Semitic."

"Pat Oliphant's outlandish and offensive use of the Star of David in combination with Nazi-like imagery is hideously anti-Semitic," Abraham Foxman said in a statement released Wednesday. "It employs Nazi imagery by portraying Israel as a jack-booted, goose-stepping headless apparition. The implication is of an Israeli policy without a head or a heart."

As of late Wednesday, Oliphant had not responded publicly to the ADL's criticism of the cartoon.

Israel in late December launched a three-week offensive in Gaza which left over 1,300 Palestinians dead and countless of homes destroyed. The offensive was a retaliation for Palestine rocket attacks on Israeli territory. Rocket attacks from Gaza and Israeli military responses have occurred sporadically since the end of the offensive.

On Monday, a United Nations expert called called for a probe to assess if the Israeli forces could differentiate between civilian and military targets in Gaza. A U.S. State Department spokesman called that official's views "biased."

The cartoon by the Pulitzer-prize winning Australian native was published by the Washington Post, Slate, and Yahoo! News, among other publications and websites.

Oliphant, who has published 20 books collecting his drawings, is no stranger to controversy, having once said that political correctness "drives me crazy." His cartoons upset the Asian American Journalists Association in 2001 and American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee in 2005.

But while Oliphant's work has made him enemies, it has also won him accolades: He has won the National Cartoonist Society Editorial Cartoon Award, along with a Pulitzer.

Oliphant's cartoon comes barely one month after a New York Post cartoon depicting a dead chimp triggered protests. Protesters believed the chimp represented President Barack Obama and demanded the newspaper be shut down. Post Publisher Rupert Murdoch later apologized for the cartoon.

In previous years, you had to go to Washington, D.C., the weekend before the event. Now, all you have to do is go to www.whitehouse.gov/eastereggroll and sign up.

No word on how many tickets will be available.

The theme of the 131st event is "Let's go play," encouraging America's youth to lead healthy and active lives.

The event, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., is open to children 10 and younger, along with their families.

Dating to 1878, the Easter egg roll has children using spoons to roll hard-boiled eggs across the lawn.

Activities this year will also includes sports, cooking classes, musical performances and storytelling.

A maximum of six tickets will be issued per order, and there may be no more than two adults per group.

F-22A crash claims life of Edwards pilot

Force F-22A crash today claimed the life of a USAF veteran and Lockheed Martin test pilot.

David Cooley, 49, of Palmdale, Calif., died when the F-22A he was piloting crashed northeast of Edwards AFB. Cooley worked as a test pilot with Lockheed Martin, and was employed at the 411th Flight Test Squadron, 412th Test Wing, on Edwards AFB. Cooley joined Lockheed Martin in 2003 and was a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He worked at the F-22 Combined Test Force, where a team of Lockheed Martin and Air Force pilots conduct F-22 aircraft testing.

"This is a very difficult day for Edwards and those who knew and respected Dave as a warrior, test pilot and friend," said Maj Gen David Eichhorn, Air Force Flight Test Center commander. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Dave and his family as we struggle through, and do all we can to support them."

At approximately 10 a.m. this morning Edwards received word that the F-22A had gone down 35 miles northeast of the base. First responders transported Cooley from the crash scene to Victor Valley Community Hospital in Victorville, where he was pronounced dead.

A board of officers is investigating the accident through an Accident Investigation Board, whose findings will be released to the public upon completion.

Base officials stress that the accident site is remote and may contain hazardous materials released from the crash, and ask that individuals refrain from entering the area until the full investigation has been completed, and debris removed from the scene.

Le rapport, sous forme de trois notes internes, a été rédigé par des juristes du ministère de la Justice sous la présidence de George W. Bush et fournit pour la première fois les détails des techniques d'interrogatoire des terroristes présumés. Cette publication interviendra après celle, début mars, de neuf notes internes datant de 2001 à 2003 ayant servi de base légale aux dérives de l'administration Bush.

Ces documents sont publiés alors que l'administration du président Obama a promis de mettre fin à des méthodes d'interrogatoires controversées, comme la simulation de noyade appelée "waterboarding". Le ministre américain de la Justice, Eric Holder, a exclu début mars l'usage de la "simulation de noyade" lors d'interrogatoires anti-terroristes, répétant qu'il assimilait cette pratique à de la torture.

Done With Surgery!

Well, surgery on my knee is done and over with and it went well! I am so happy as I am ready to start rehabbing my knee and get it back to normal!

I had the surgery done Friday arthroscopically. The surgeon and anethesiologist gave me the choice of going under or getting a block from the waist down. I chose the block, so I was actually awake for the surgery and got to watch it on the monitor. I didn't think I would like it as I can't even watch blood getting drawn. But because it was on a monitor and I never looked down at my actual knee, it was pretty cool.

When the surgeon first went in and saw the inside of my knee on the monitor, he said and I quote, "You really SHREDDED your meniscus!" Shredded wasn't the word I wanted to hear. I knew it was a large tear based on the doctor reading the MRI, but it was ripped up even more than the MRI depicted. I saw it myself... the meniscus was pretty torn up... kind of looked like a snow globe inside my knee. Can you belive it all started from a salsa move! The doctor cut the torn part away on both tears.... I had a small and large tear on different sides of the knee. And then before I knew it, the surgery was over. It only took about an hour. I spent several hours in recovery as the block wore off. And by afternoon, I was able to head home, albeit on crutches, but I was glad the procedure went so well and it was outpatient surgery. I was pretty woozy and sleepy yesterday from the anesthesia and pain medicine. I only had a little bit of pain yesterday and today, it hasn't been bad at all. I can only walk using crutches right now and have to stay in bed mostly.

But I've already started leg exercises today per doctor's orders and will see a physical therapist this week. After about 6 weeks of rehab, the doctor tells me my knee will be back to the way it was before the injury. All in all, not too bad. I had a great surgeon and everything went smoothly. I'm planning on my recovery being the same so I can dance again next season, I hope. I won't be back at work Monday, but I'm hoping I will feel up to it by Tuesday. See you soon.

3 California Police Officers Dead, 1 Gravely Wounded After Traffic Stop

Three Oakland police officers were killed and one is currently on life support after two shootings Saturday, the first after a routine traffic stop and the second after a massive manhunt ended in gunfire, authorities said. The gunman, who was wanted on a parole violation, was also killed.

The violence on Saturday began when two officers on motorcycles stopped a 1995 Buick sedan in east Oakland just after 1 p.m., Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said. The driver opened fire, killing one officer and gravely wounding another.

"It's in these moments that words are extraordinarily inadequate," said Mayor Ron Dellums at a somber news conference announcing the slayings. It was the first time in the history of the Oakland Police Department that three officers were killed in the line of duty in the same day.

The gunman then fled on foot, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies. Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland closed to traffic.

Around 3:30 p.m. officers got an anonymous tip that the gunman was inside a nearby apartment building. A SWAT team entered an apartment to clear and search it when the gunman opened fire, police said. Two members of the SWAT team were killed and a third was grazed by a bullet, police said.

Officers returned fire, killing 26-year-old Lovelle Mixon of Oakland, Acting Oakland police Chief Howard Jordan said.

The slain officers were identified as Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, who was killed at the first shooting. The officers killed at the second location were Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43, and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35.

This is the first marriage for Heming, a 30-year-old model/actress.

7 Children Among 14 Killed in Montana Crash

BUTTE, Mont. — A single engine turboprop airplane nose-dived into a cemetery as it approached the Butte airport Sunday afternoon, killing 14 people aboard, a federal official said.

The number of those dead was confirmed by Karen Byrd, an FAA operations officer in Renton, Wash. Byrd said the death toll included seven adults and seven children.

The plane was believed to be taking its occupants on a ski trip to Montana. The death toll originally had been put as high as 17.

The aircraft crashed and burned at Holy Cross Cemetery, 500 feet short of Bert Mooney Airport in Butte, said FAA spokesman Mike Fergus.

"We think that it was probably a ski trip for the kids," Fergus said.

An investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board offered few details at a press conference in Butte Sunday night. No cause of the crash was given.

"We are just beginning our investigation," said Kristi Dunks. "We don't have a lot of information at this time.

"Certain family members were contacted," she said. "At this point, I don't have an exact number."

A California newspaper, the Napa Valley Register, reported on its Web site late Sunday that a family of five from St. Helena, Calif., including three preschoolers, was among the victims.

Dunks would not say if there had been a distress call from the pilot. It was partly cloudy, the visibility was 10 miles and winds were blowing from the northwest around 10 mph at the time of the crash, according to hourly temperature information from the National Weather Service.

The aircraft had departed from Oroville, Calif., and the pilot had filed a flight plan showing a destination of Bozeman, about 85 miles southeast of Butte. But the pilot canceled his flight plan at some point and headed for Butte, Fergus said.

Alaska's Mount Redoubt Erupts Four Times

BREAKING NEWS — Alaska's Mt. Redoubt volcano erupted late Monday and early Tuesday in "four large explosions," sending an ash plume an estimated 50,000 feet into the air, the Alaska Volcano Observatory reported.

"The ash cloud went to 50,000 feet, and it's currently drifting toward the north, northeast," said Janet Schaefer, a geologist with the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

Geologists at the observatory say the volcano, located 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, erupted four times, from 10:30 p.m. to 1:40 a.m. local time.

"This is a fairly large eruption, close to the larger cities in Alaska," Geophysicist John Power said. He said nearby cities have not yet reported ash fall from the volcano, but noted that it's still early.

Prouty has also been found guilty for accessing a U.S. government computer system to unlawfully find information about her relatives and the Islamic organization Hizballah.
Nada faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a US$250,000 fine for the conspiracy charge; one year in prison and a $100,000 fine for the unauthorized computer access charge; and 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the naturalization charge.

The series of photos released by Acura Friday to tease its New York auto show debut on April 8 show a four-door car with a fastback design. It looks like a sports car, but could also be more of a crossover, as it is difficult to tell the height from the pictures. Rear headroom looks severely compromised from the sloping roof, especially if it is a sedan. We would expect it to get power from Acura's existing 2.4-liter four cylinder or 3.5-liter V-6 engine.

New York Radio Personality George Weber Found Brutally Slain

George Weber

George Weber was found slain in his apartment early Sunday. The following comes from the New York Post:

Weber, who would have turned 58 tomorrow, was discovered in his bed shortly before 10 a.m. today with multiple stab wounds to his neck after his bosses, concerned that he hadn't shown up for work, called cops.

Police told the Post that Weber was probably murdered on Friday. There were no signs of forced entry into Weber's apartment, but the Post reported that the radio man's residence was ransacked and a water faucet was still running when police entered the premises.

George Weber worked for years as a radio news anchor at WABC in New York and then for ABC News. According to his website, he started his broadcasting career in high school, and radio work would eventually take Weber to Colorado and California before he headed back east to a gig in NYC.

IBM combs through Sun contracts

IBM is reportedly wading through Sun Microsystems' contracts and documents for potential conflicts or problems, as it works its way through the due diligence process toward a merger, according to a report Friday in The Wall Street Journal.

IBM's attorneys have been poring over Sun's documents for at least the past several days, if not longer, according to the Journal.

And while the due diligence process is not anticipated to lead to any nixing of a deal, IBM is seeking a clear understanding of where Sun stands with its complex cross-licensing agreements and other contracts, according to sources cited by the Journal.

In addition to Sun's contracts, IBM may also be taking a peek at Sun's fiscal third-quarter data, given the company will be closing its quarterly financial books at the end of the month.

When Sun reported its fiscal second-quarter results in January, it posted an 11 percent year-over-year drop in revenue. But on a sequential basis, its financial performance was less severe.

As the parties work toward a merger, IBM is reportedly considering a buyout price of $6.5 billion to $8 billion, according to the Journal.

Sun closed down about 6 percent to $8.10 a share during regular trading Friday. But in after-market trading, its shares rose nearly 2 percent to $8.24 a share.

FedEx plane crashes on landing at Narita airport; pilot, co-pilot confirmed dead

A FedEx cargo plane with a pilot and co-pilot aboard crash landed and burst into flames early Monday morning at Narita International Airport, east of Tokyo, according to airport and police officials.

The two men believed to have been on the plane were confirmed dead at the Japanese Red Cross Narita Hospital, according to hospital officials.

The MD-11 aircraft, Flight 80 from Guangzhou, China, was apparently whipped back up by strong winds while attempting to land at around 6:50 a.m., according to the Chiba prefectural police.Video footage aired by NHK showed the plane touching down on its rear wheels and its nose hitting as if slammed onto the runway.The plane bounced and its left wing hit the ground, bursting into flames.

The plane then flopped over and veered off the runway with flames exploding from the center of the fuselage.The two crew members were rescued from the plane at around 8 a.m. and taken to the Japanese Red Cross hospital, according to the police. Both were U.S. citizens, one in his 50s and the other in his 40s, local fire department officials said.Firefighters said they extinguished the fire shortly after 9 a.m.A local observatory said winds of up to about 72 kilometers per hour were blowing near the airport at the time of the accident.The observatory said it had notified airline companies and related entities of the possibility of the occurrence of wind shear—a condition in which wind speed and direction suddenly change—after the weather became rough on Sunday evening.The cargo plane touched down on Runway A, the longer of the airport’s two runways.

The airport’s main runway is currently closed, according to the airport office.

17 dead in Montana plane crash

Federal investigators were at the scene of a single-engine plane crash near Butte, Mont., Sunday that killed 17 people, officials said.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman told CNN the plane was a Pilatus PC-12 that departed Orville, Calif., Sunday morning bound for Bozeman, Mont. FAA spokesman Mike Fergus said the pilot changed the flight plan and rerouted to Butte instead, crashing in a wooded area near a cemetery about 500 feet short of Bert Mooney Airport.

Reports said many of those on board were children, CNN said.

The Pilatus PC-12 is a Swiss-made plane introduced in 1994 listed as being designed to carry one or two pilots and eight passengers, Flying magazine said in its September issue.
